Juan Manuel Ruiz Pardo on guitar arrangements:
“To me, one of the most attractive things about the guitar is that it is a bridge between different musical cultures. The same instrument is used in classical, flamenco, blues, south american and endless folkloric expressions (compare the respective languages of Paco de Lucia, John Williams, Pierre Bensusan, Ralph Towner, Charlie Byrd or Baden Powell,to name just a few) …so it acts as a sort of vessel enriching them with elements from others”.
“In this sense, on choosing music for arranging I mainly follow my personal wish to perform it. I´ve never felt, as a listener, the need to choose a certain type of music and deprive myself of the rest, and similarly I feel no style boundaries when choosing a piece… excepting my love for it and the convincement that I can serve it efficiently”.
“I think that choosing the ideal media for the arrangement is a crucial point: a certain piece may work great on two guitars and not so much on one; and a piece which can be efficiently played on one guitar may sound coarse or boring on two or more…”
“Another aspect I love from the guitar is its capacity for polyphony, which is so often misused when writing for it or improvising. The temptation to keep things too simple is specially strong when arranging pop songs. Well, the melody-accompaniment structure may be simple; but you can still give it artistic interest if you use your imagination and know what your instrument can do. It may be useful trying to imagine the musical content you want to convey in aural terms; I mean: not caged into the instrument´s limits,; and then trying to find ways to bring it to the guitar. To me, that´s a useful departure point towards new resources. And there are always new ideas waiting for you to find them. That moment of discovery is one of the things that make the whole thing worthwhile”
